What is granular synthesis?
Granular synthesis breaks audio samples into tiny fragments called grains. Each grain is normally only a few milliseconds long and can be modified in pitch, duration, amplitude and timbre. By combining and layering these fragments, producers can create detailed textures with a distinctly fragmented character.
As the technique became more popular, software synthesizers began integrating granular engines beside subtractive, wavetable and FM synthesis. Modern instruments now make it possible to move from traditional synthesis into experimental sample manipulation inside a single patch.
